Travis Morien (Perth)

Travis has a Bachelor of Science with Honours from the University of Western Australia and has completed the Diploma of Financial Planning.

Travis has been a financial planner since April 2001, when he became an authorised representative of AXA Financial Planning. A year later Travis moved to a small non-aligned financial planning firm, Taylor Financial Planners where he remained until July 2005.

Frustrated by the widespread conflicts of interest in the financial planning profession Travis decided to do something about it which included creating one of the most popular financial planning websites in Australia and in 2005 he obtained his own Australian Financial Services License through his company Compass Financial Planners Pty Ltd.

Since then Travis has become a cult hero on many investment forums due to his willingness to share information, educate others and offer a true independent financial advice service which is so rare here in Australia.  Travis appointed Matthew Ross as an authorised representative of Compass Financial Planners Pty Ltd in 2006 and Daniel Brammall became an authorised representative in 2007.

In 2008 Travis invited Matt and Daniel to become directors of Compass Financial Planners Pty Ltd which led to the formation of Australian Independent Financial Advisers Pty Ltd.

Travis' main area of interest is investment and financial planning, he spends his weekends reading Journal of Finance and similar publications, keeping up on the latest research and developments in investment theory and practice.

Apart from investment, Travis is also into science and technology, the cultivation and propagation of West Australian native plants, carnivorous plants, tropical fish, building and using astronomical telescopes. Travis likes to watch documentaries on SBS, particularly ones about 20th century history and politics.

Matthew Ross (Melbourne)

Born and raised in the nation’s capital, Matt has eleven (11) years experience in the financial planning profession, which he has acquired since completing a Commerce degree (majoring in accounting) from the University of Canberra.

Matt has completed the Diploma of Financial Planning (2001), achieved Certified Financial Planner status (2002) and studied the Financial Planning Certificate (UK); a qualification that he obtained during his time spent working overseas. Matt worked in the United Kingdom for 2 years between 2002 and 2003, contracting to a number of multi-national companies as a compliance consultant.

In 2006 Matt started his own financial planning practice (MJRoss Financial) as an authorised representative of Compass Financial Planners Pty Ltd.  The decision to become an authorised representative of Compass was an easy one as he and Travis Morien shared the same values, investment philosophy and passion to educate Australians on financial planning matters.

In 2008 Matt merged his business with Travis and Daniel and became a director of Australian Independent Financial Advisers Pty Ltd.

Away from the calculator, Matt lives for sport.

He is a statistician for the Melbourne Storm Rugby League team and an avid Hawthorn Hawks fan. When the Hawks or Storm aren't in town, he will most likely be found on the tennis court, kayaking on the Yarra River or doing a sports crossword in a cafe.  He can also recognise the flags of most countries of the world...but that's another story.

Daniel Brammall (Canberra)

Daniel Brammall has been a self-employed financial services professional since 1992, obtaining a Proper Authority to act as a Financial Adviser in 1995, and achieving Certified Financial Planner status in 1999. A year later his company, Brammall Financial, was granted a Dealers License by the ASIC, and Principal Membership of the Financial Planning Association.

During his tenure as the sole owner of an Australian Financial Services Licensee, he gained operational experience as a fund manager as well as public company director and adviser. He also structured a number of investments for sophisticated clients.

Early in 2006 Daniel got in touch with Travis Morien, having been a secret lurker on his investment and financial planning website for a number of years. So convinced of Travis’ method and impressed by his approach was he, that in 2007 he handed his AFSL back to the ASIC and joined Compass.

In 2008 Daniel merged his business with Travis and Matt and became a director of Australian Independent Financial Advisers Pty Ltd.
